Why basics fail (and what we're doing about it)

July 10, 2026

Sizing that shifts, fabric that thins, brands that vanish when something goes wrong. Here's why everyday basics have become a gamble — and what Mainstay is building instead.

Why basics fail (and what we're doing about it)

If you've ever ordered a medium online and received something that fits like a large, you know the problem.

Basics are supposed to be easy. A tee is a tee. Socks are socks. But somewhere between the factory and your door, the promise breaks down.

Three things go wrong

Sizing inconsistency. There's no global standard for a size medium. Brands set their own measurements, factories interpret them differently, and the result lands in your letterbox two sizes off. At R50, you eat the loss. At R159, it stings.

Quality that doesn't hold. Cheap basics survive their first wash and sometimes their second. By the third, the fabric has thinned, the hem has rolled, and the colour has gone grey. That's not a bargain — that's a cost you pay twice.

A brand that disappears. The cheapest platforms have no customer service worth calling. Your return request goes into a chat queue. Your refund request goes into a void.

What we're doing differently

Mainstay is built around one commitment: basics that fit right and hold up. That means consistent sizing (pre-washed, measured true-to-label), fabric that survives a month of real washing, and a human you can actually email when something's wrong.

We're starting small. Six products. One supplier we've vetted properly. We'd rather launch with six things we're confident in than sixty we're guessing about.

We're not going to solve every problem on day one. But we'll tell you exactly what we have, what we're working on, and what to expect. That's the start.
